FAQ

What is TrailAhead?

Which file formats can I import?
TrailAhead supports GPX and KML files. You can export tracks from Komoot, Outdooractive, AllTrails or other planning apps and upload them directly into TrailAhead.
Which waypoints are found automatically?
TrailAhead searches the OpenStreetMap database for mountain huts, drinking water and springs, campsites, benches, supermarkets, parcel lockers, toilets, restaurants, public transport stops, wind shelters and accommodation — 12 categories in total.
How does AI stage planning work?
The AI analyses your trail, available accommodation, terrain data and daylight times. You enter your walking speed and sleeping preferences, and the AI creates an optimal daily plan with overnight stops, breaks and resupply points.
Is TrailAhead free?
Yes, TrailAhead is free to use. Create an account and plan your long-distance hike directly in the browser — no installation required.
Can I use TrailAhead offline?
The mobile app (iOS) automatically caches map tiles for offline access on the trail. The web app requires an internet connection for planning.
Can I export stages as GPX?
Yes, you can export each stage individually or all stages together as GPX files. These files are compatible with Komoot, Outdooractive and other navigation apps.
Do I need my own GPX track?
No! The trail library contains curated long-distance routes with descriptions, photos, videos and pre-planned stages. Add any trail to your collection with one click and start planning straight away — no GPX file needed.
Can I create a PDF plan?
Yes. TrailAhead exports your finished plan as a full PDF with stage table, maps and AI reasoning. The "Family Briefing" variant creates a simplified version you can share with family or friends.
What are detours?
Detours are planned side-trips to POIs or sights that lie off the main trail. TrailAhead automatically calculates the walking route, distance and required time. You can refine the route with via-points — and everything is factored into your daily plan.
