Albsteig / Schwäbische Alb HW1

About this trail

The Albsteig HW1 links Donauwörth and Tuttlingen along the northern edge of the Swabian Alb. The Swabian Alb Association has maintained this long-distance route for more than a century. Much of it follows the Albtrauf escarpment, but the walking is far from a continuous level traverse: valleys interrupt the high ground and demand fresh climbs. Sixteen official stages structure a journey of about 360 kilometres, with considerable differences in daily effort. The red triangle identifies the HW1; at junctions, follow the actual signs and the currently marked path. The eastern opening introduces the Wörnitz valley and Harburg Castle before woodland and open country along the edges of the Ries and Härtsfeld. Here the hills feel gentler and the escarpment is less pronounced than farther west. Bopfingen and the eastern Alb form a distinct first chapter. The route approaches Unterkochen through the valley around the source of the Kocher, then continues towards the Volkmarsberg and the Rosenstein above Heubach. Castle ruins, cave entrances and juniper-covered ground add variety. Visits and additional summit or village access walks need their own allowance in the day. Farther west, the escarpment becomes the defining feature. The Wasserberg, Reußenstein ruins and rocky viewpoints overlook the foothills from changing angles. The Randecker Maar introduces the region's volcanic past, while Teck Castle and Hohenneuffen provide a connection with its medieval history. Near Bad Urach, water and limestone become especially tangible at the Urach waterfall. Forest paths alternate with open viewpoints and steep transitions between levels. Castle visits, refreshments and indoor attractions depend on current access and opening arrangements, so they should not be treated as guaranteed stops. The middle part of the journey takes in Lichtenstein Castle, the area around the Nebelhöhle, and the heights near the Roßberg and Dreifürstenstein. The official Honau stage point is at the Rötelstein above the village; reaching accommodation below adds walking. Current notice checked on 28 October 2026: a short diversion is reported between Hirschhäusle and Bolberg on stage 11. This track represents the published official main route and does not separately incorporate that temporary diversion. Follow the current signs there and check the operator's notice again before setting out. The western stages cross the Zollernalb, passing the Raichberg and Böllat before the hills around Lochen and Plettenberg. Descents into valleys and renewed climbs remain part of the journey rather than disappearing towards the finish. Beyond the Oberhohenberg comes the Lemberg, the Swabian Alb's highest mountain at 1,015 metres. These are not alpine elevations, but weather and accumulated effort matter on exposed high ground. The route eventually continues via the Dreifaltigkeitsberg to Tuttlingen. The stored main route finishes at the Rathaussteg; getting to the railway station is an additional access journey. Carry enough water for the planned stage: the karst plateau does not offer a dependable drinking-water source at every viewpoint. Arrange accommodation before departure, particularly where a stage ends away from a larger settlement, such as the Boßler or Teck Castle. Wet limestone, roots and leaves can be slippery, and cliff edges deserve care. Snow and ice can substantially change conditions on higher sections. Stay on permitted paths in protected areas. Trains at the ends and regional buses can support shorter sections, but check current services, return connections and any additional walking before choosing a daily finish.
