Bliessteig

About this trail

Route notice checked on 28 October 2026: a signed diversion in Sarreguemines runs via Rue de la Piscine and Avenue de la Blies near the Saargemünder Straße bridge and Promenade de la Blies. It is expected to remain in place until 30 June 2027. This track contains the published official main route and does not incorporate that temporary diversion. Follow the current signs in the affected area and check the operator’s notices again before starting. The Bliessteig begins in Sarreguemines with a riverside walk that gives the international border a very everyday setting. After crossing the Saar, the route passes the mouth of the Blies and continues into a landscape of river meadows, villages and woodland. It moves between France and Germany, so the French opening belongs to the full route. The Bliesmühle ceramics museum and Gräfinthal monastery introduce cultural stops before the first day is over. Beyond Gräfinthal, the walk leaves the immediate river corridor for wooded slopes and higher ground towards Bebelsheim. Orchards, open land and small woods reveal the varied character of the Bliesgau biosphere landscape. The route continues through the Schornwald, with its burial mounds, and the area around Ballweiler and Wecklingen to Blieskastel. The town's baroque centre rewards time on foot after the day's hiking rather than simply serving as an overnight address. The next stages bring another change. The Gollenstein is a much older landmark than Blieskastel's town houses, and woodland and sandstone formations then become more prominent. Kirkel Castle and the surrounding forest form a distinctive part of the journey. The walk continues past the ruins of Wörschweiler monastery towards Schwarzenacker, where the Roman museum offers a further layer of regional history. Museum visits need their own time allowance and should be checked against current visitor arrangements. On the approach to Homburg, stream valleys and woods give way to the climb onto the Schlossberg. Fortification remains, views over the town and the Schlossberghöhlen provide reasons to linger. The route then crosses the Karlsberg forest park and the pond landscape near Jägersburg before reaching the Höcherberg. Its final stage descends through woodland and Bexbach's green surroundings to the Kulturbahnhof. These northern days show why the Bliessteig is not simply a level walk beside one river. The nine official stages vary in effort, and some stage points are at huts or visitor destinations rather than in the centre of an accommodation village. Arrange lodging and access around the actual daily walking plan. Wet paths, woodland steps and fallen leaves require care, while open sections call for enough water and sun protection. Springs, ponds and Kneipp pools should not be assumed to provide drinking water. Regional buses and trains help with arrival, departure and shorter sections, but current connections should be checked before travelling.
