Diemelsteig

About this trail

The Diemelsteig begins at Heringhausen beside Lake Diemelsee and makes a roughly 62 km circuit through the hills and valleys of the eastern Sauerland. The lake gives the walk its name and a memorable setting, while the route beyond its shores explores woodland, meadows and small villages. Views open across the wooded hills of Diemelsee Nature Park, then disappear again as the path returns beneath the trees. This steady change between sheltered woodland and open country gives the walk its character. Around Heringhausen and the rocky viewpoint of St. Muffert, the lake takes centre stage. Farther south, village history becomes part of the journey. Adorf’s mining heritage recalls the extraction of iron ore, while the distinctive monastery church at Flechtdorf adds a different chapter to the landscape. Quiet returns quickly beyond the settlements, with field paths and woodland stretches leaving time to take in the countryside between stops. The official three-day division runs via Adorf and Schweinsbühl before returning to Heringhausen. Shorter daily distances are possible with a more relaxed itinerary. Although the hills look gentle, repeated climbs and occasional narrow or rocky paths call for sound footwear and reasonable stamina. Staying in the villages gives the walk a pleasing rhythm, with evenings among the houses and mornings back in the countryside. Spring foliage, shaded summer woods and autumn colour make different seasons rewarding. Arrange accommodation and any transfers ahead, as places to eat can lie away from the route. Bookable Trekkingpark Sauerland pitches provide an option for carrying a tent. Bring drinking water and food for the day. The neighbouring Uplandsteig and the separate large loop offer further ways to explore the region.
