Forststeig Elbsandstein

About this trail

The Forststeig Elbsandstein starts at Schöna railway station beside the Elbe and crosses the wooded Saxon–Bohemian border region to Bad Schandau. Its roughly 104 km route explores mainly the country on the river’s left bank. Opened in 2018 by the German and Czech forestry authorities, it is designed for walkers carrying overnight equipment and wanting to spend several days beyond the villages. The first stage climbs from the Elbe valley to Großer Zschirnstein. Later, Hoher Schneeberg on the Czech side offers wide views across the surrounding country. Around Ostrov, wooded ravines and rocky hills follow one another; in the Bielatal, slender sandstone towers rise between the trees. Katzstein, Lampertsstein and the table mountains of the later stages repeatedly open the forest to another viewpoint. Seven recommended days connect these landscapes into a continuous trek. Simple trekking huts, designated bivouac sites and partner accommodation provide overnight options. With a forest stay, the woodland remains part of the experience after the walking day ends: the evening centres on a sheltered site rather than the next village. A tent-based journey also means carrying shelter, food and equipment for changing weather. Repeated climbs, narrow woodland paths and long stretches away from settlements make the Forststeig physically demanding. The season runs from the beginning of April to the end of October. Forest overnight stays require the operator’s trekking ticket and follow its rules; sites can fill at weekends. Plan drinking water, resupply and alternative accommodation before setting out. Check current notices for fire danger, forestry work and closures. Railway access at Schöna and Bad Schandau fits this linear walk well.
