Goldsteig – Nordroute

The northern Goldsteig runs for roughly 415 km from Marktredwitz to Passau. Beginning in the Upper Palatinate Forest, it develops a stronger mountain character as it enters the Bavarian Forest. The journey brings together a quiet opening among the Steinwald, ponds and the Waldnaab valley with long ridges near the Bohemian border. After the shared opening section, this route continues through Rötz, Herzogau and Furth im Wald towards the Bavarian Forest’s higher ground. Hohenbogen, Kaitersberg and Großer Arber shape the first mountain stages, followed by Falkenstein, Rachel and Lusen. Broad forests separate rocky ridges and viewpoints. The boulder field on Lusen and the granite landscapes around Dreisessel give the walk a distinctive geological character before it gradually turns towards Passau. The Bavarian Forest National Park provides a particularly memorable stretch. Mountain woods, open former grazing grounds known as Schachten and upland peatlands create contrasting scenes. These clearings and bogs change the rhythm of the walk: dark water, cotton grass and quiet paths replace the exposed rock of the summits. Traces of former land use remain alongside natural forest development. Passau’s old town and river setting give the long mountain journey a different kind of conclusion. The official itinerary has 23 stages. Long distances, repeated climbs and rocky paths require stamina and sure-footedness, especially in the Bavarian Forest. Spring to autumn offers many opportunities, but snow can linger on higher ground and weather changes quickly. Plan accommodation, huts and resupply around each day. Consult current operator notices where paths or mountain accommodation may be closed, and follow national park rules in sensitive woodland and peatland areas. An unhurried schedule leaves time for both summit views and the quieter days beneath the trees.
