Malerweg

About this trail

The Malerweg starts at Pirna-Liebethal, explores the rock landscapes of Saxon Switzerland and finishes roughly 116 km later in Pirna’s market square. Its name recalls the artists who began finding subjects in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in the eighteenth century. Caspar David Friedrich, Ludwig Richter and other Romantic painters were drawn to a landscape where sheer rock, deep ravines and broad views lie close together. Today’s staged walk continues that connection between scenery and art. The early days alternate shaded valleys and small towns beside the Elbe with the first viewpoints. From Stadt Wehlen the route reaches the Bastei area and Hohnstein, then continues into the more intricate rock country of the eastern Saxon Switzerland. Sandstone towers, narrow woodland passages and elevated views over the river give each climb a different perspective. One moment the path lies between cool rock walls; soon afterwards, trees and stone stretch away beneath the viewpoint. At Schmilka the walk crosses to the left bank of the Elbe. The table mountains around Gohrisch and the landscape near Königstein give the second half a distinct character before the return via Weißig to Pirna. Inns, mills and villages bring the history of early landscape tourism into the journey. Eight official stages provide a comfortable framework for discovering these changing areas. The distance alone understates the effort: stairs, steep climbs and uneven paths make some days demanding. Good footwear and sure-footedness matter, particularly on wet sandstone steps. Spring and autumn often bring pleasant conditions, while famous viewpoints attract more visitors during holidays. Book accommodation ahead and consult current operator notices for closures. Trains, buses and Elbe ferries help with arrival and individual stage access. Allow time for the quiet stretches between the celebrated panoramas.
