Sauerland-Höhenflug – Altena–Korbach

About this trail

This branch of the Sauerland-Höhenflug begins at Altena Castle. From the town in the Lenne valley, the trail enters a landscape of wooded ridges, meadows and open viewpoints. Neuenrade and Altenaffeln lead towards Wildewiese before the route joins the Meinerzhagen branch near Röhrenspring. From there, both variants share their eastward course. The complete walk stored here measures about 191 kilometres. Beyond Wenholthausen and Bad Fredeburg, the trail crosses the Hunau uplands towards Altastenberg. Around Kahler Asten it reaches its highest landscape before descending towards Hallenberg. Wide views alternate with sheltered woodland, giving the walk a varied rhythm. Medelon is followed by the Orke valley, Küstelberg and Düdinghausen, with the Eisenberg area forming the eastern end. The standard plan follows the eleven official stages from Altena. Distances are calculated from the stored main trail; access walks into settlements can add to the day. The main route finishes near Eisenberg outside Korbach. The black-marked access path to the walking portal in town is a separate connection and is not included in this track. Plan that link if arriving by train or staying in central Korbach. The elevation gain comes through many individual climbs. Open ridges can be windy, shaded paths may remain wet after rain, and winter conditions on the higher sections can differ considerably from the valleys. Choose daily distances to suit your fitness and the conditions, check current trail notices and arrange accommodation ahead. Carry enough food and water to reach the next dependable stop.
